Recipe Bisi Bele Bath
Bisi Bele Bath is a classic dish from the cuisine of Karnataka, South India. The name literally means "hot lentil rice" in Kannada.
This heartwarming dish combines rice, toor dal (a type of lentil), and a rich variety of vegetables and spices. It is known for its unique taste that comes from the special Bisi Bele Bath masala, a spice mixture typical of this dish.
It is often served with a dollop of ghee (clarified butter) and crispy boondi or potato chips.

Supplies:
- Large cooking pot or pressure cooker
- Small frying pan for tempering
- Wooden spoon
- Measuring cups and spoons
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of rice
- 1 cup toor dal (yellow lentils)
- 3 cups water (for cooking rice and dal)
- 2 cups mixed vegetables (such as carrot, peas, and potato)
- 1 large tomato, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon tamarind paste
- 2 tablespoons Bisi Bele Bath masala
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- A handful of curry leaves
- 2-3 tablespoons of ghee
- Salt to taste
- For garnish: roasted cashew nuts and fresh coriander
Preparation:
Cooking Rice and Dal:
- Rinse the rice and dal under running water until the water runs clear.
- Add them to a large saucepan with water and cook until soft (about 30-40 minutes).
- You can also use a pressure cooker to shorten the cooking time.
Add vegetables:
- Add the chopped vegetables and tomatoes to the cooked rice and dal.
- Mix in the tamarind paste and Bisi Bele Bath masala and let it simmer until the vegetables are done.
Tempering:
- Heat ghee in a small frying pan.
- Add mustard seeds, turmeric powder and curry leaves and let them crackle.
- Pour this mixture over the Bisi Bele Bath.
Garnish:
- Garnish with roasted cashew nuts and fresh coriander.
- Serve hot.
