Weight loss from steamed Indian recipes (3)

Eating these healthy dishes.

Weight loss from steamed Indian recipes.

You can continue to eat these healthy steamed dishes while following your weight loss diet.

Many of us view a weight loss diet as bland, tasteless, and predominantly cooked. These concerns stem from myths that suggest that you rely entirely on raw vegetables if you want to lose weight. Or that you have to give up something tasty, especially your favorite foods such as noodles and pizza.

While it's recommended that you regulate your intake of fattening or carbohydrate-rich foods, you don't have to give up everything you love completely. With the right choices and some dietary changes, you can even continue eating lots of Indian snacks and dishes while successfully completing your weight loss journey.

Steamed dishes like dhokla and idli are some of the first names that come to mind when we aim for a guilt-free indulgence. In this four part, we add 4 other steamed dishes from India, which are healthy and delicious and might fit into your weight loss diet.

Part 3: Siddu.

Patholi is a steamed sweet dish made during festivals in Mangalore and neighboring areas. Turmeric leaf is a must-have in your pantry if you're trying to make authentic patholi. And, like haldi powder, the leaf also adds several health-promoting properties to the recipe.

It is made by spreading a sweet paste made from rice, desiccated coconut, jaggery, and cardamom powder on the leaf.

Prep time: 120 minutes
Preparation time: 20 minutes
Difficulty: easy
Number of persons: 4
Type of dish: breakfast, snack, lunch

Necessities:

  • Steamer
  • Bowl (2x)
  • Mixer

Ingredients:

For the dough

  • 500 grams atta/maida
  • 1.5 tsp yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1-2 tablespoons of ghee
  • What lukewarm water

For the filling

  • 1/2 cup poppy seeds (soaked)
  • 1/2 cup walnut (soaked)
  • 1/2 cup almonds (soaked)
  • 1 tablespoon chili flakes
  • 2 tablespoons roasted cumin-coriander powder
  • Salt to taste
  • A pinch of turmeric powder
  • Some freshly chopped mint and coriander leaves

Preparation:

  1. Take atta/maida, yeast, salt, sugar and ghee in a bowl and mix them together. Now add lukewarm water to it and knead soft dough with it. Do not pour all the water at once.

  2. Brush some ghee over the dough and cover with a wet cloth. Let it rest for 1.5 to 2 hours. You can use vegetable oil instead of ghee; However, ghee adds flavor to siddu.
  3. While the dough is resting, you can start preparing the filling for siddu. Grind poppy seeds, walnuts and almonds separately into smooth pastes.
  4. Pour the pastes into a mixing bowl and add the rest of the ingredients. Mix everything together and the filling for siddu is ready.
  5. After 1.5 to 2 hours (if the dough is airy enough), put the steamer/momo maker ready to steam the buns. Brush some ghee on the steamer so that the buns don't stick to the bottom.
  6. Now make small circles of the dough and add filling in the middle (just like you do when making stuffed paratha). You can also give it a gujia-like shape if you like.
  7. Steam the buns for 15-20 minutes and your hot and tasty siddhu is ready to be served.

Serve it warm with a generous amount of ghee on top and some chutney/ketchup on the side.

Enjoy your dinner!
