Tukmaria, or basil seeds, are black seeds that are very similar to chia seeds and offer tremendous health benefits. They are originally from India. Basil seeds are rich in protein, essential fats, carbohydrates and are packed with fiber. Surprisingly, they contain no calories.
Tukmaria are very hard and you cannot consume them raw. Thus, they are best consumed after being soaked in water, which makes them more gelatinous. The seeds usually come from sweet basil, i.e. Ocimum basilicum, which we often use as a seasoning. Since they come from the sweet basil plant, they are commonly referred to as sweet basil seeds.
Tumaria offer many health benefits. But soaking in water and consuming it is possible, but it is not very tasty. Try to process them in a delicious fresh fruit juice or lemonade.
