A healthy alternative to the regular roti

Jowar, also known as sorghum, is a millet rich in minerals, fiber, protein and antioxidants. In addition, the high potassium content can help control blood pressure. Compared to your regular wheat roti, this one is more satisfying and nutritious.

Jowar millet is considered one of the healthiest foods available. This grain, in addition to being able to control blood pressure, is known for many more health benefits, including improved digestion, increased immunity, improved heart health, blood sugar control, improved skin and hair, and weight loss!

For example, roti, a staple of Indian food, is eaten with almost every Indian meal and is said to increase your weight if made from wheat. So if you want to give your roti a healthy twist, here we have a recipe for jowar roti!

The fiber and protein content in jowar can help induce a feeling of fullness. This will prevent you from getting weird eating binges.

With such benefits of jowar, let's see how to make this delicious jowar roti with a combination of various healthy vegetables.

For this vegetarian jowar roti recipe, we added cucumber, carrot, onion, coriander, mint leaves, green pepper, salt and carom seeds to the jowar flour and kneaded it into a soft dough. Then make small, fibrous rotis using the same technique we follow to prepare makki roti.

Preparation time: 15 minutes
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Difficulty: easy
Type of dish: side dish

Supplies:

  • Bowl
  • Tawa

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of jowar flour
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • Half teaspoon of carom seeds
  • Half a cup of grated cucumber
  • Half cup grated carrot
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 2 finely chopped green chillies
  • 1 tablespoon chopped cilantro
  • Half a tablespoon of chopped mint leaves
  • Lukewarm water for kneading

Preparation:

  1. Put all ingredients in a bowl, except water.
  2. Mix everything dry.
  3. Now slowly pour water and knead a soft dough.
  4. Cover the bowl with a lid or cheesecloth and let the dough rest for 15 minutes.
  5. Make small rounds of the dough the size of a large egg and flatten them by hand to make small rotis. If necessary, place them under baking paper to generate more pressure until they get a nice round shape of about 15 cm.

You can wet your hands with some water as no oil is used in this process.

  6. Once the round rotis are made, roast them well on a tawa. Make sure the gas is on medium heat and both sides of the roti are well cooked. If necessary, use a little bit of oil or ghee on the tawa before you put the roti on the tawa.

Combine veggie jowar roti with curd and some pickle/salad and enjoy.
